Who We Are

Rainbow Heights Club, located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York, is a drop-in space that offers peer support and advocacy for lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender New Yorkers who are living with mental illness. We are committed to creating a safe place for community members to socialize, access peer support and take the next step forward on their recovery journey, together.

Participation in Rainbow Heights Club is free and confidential, and there are no attendance requirements. You decide the level of participation that is right for you.

Rainbow Heights Club is not a therapy or psychiatry clinic. Rainbow Heights Club offers extra support that is separate from your psychiatrist or therapist. The Club is a place you can share your experiences with staff and other community members who understand where you're coming from, and who have faced similar challenges.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender non-conforming people who also experience mental illness face many difficult challenges. In hospitals, clinics and day treatment programs, they may feel uncomfortable talking about their identities and experiences as LGBTQ people.

You may have hidden your sexual identity from other consumers, or from your doctor, nurse or therapist. You may have felt alone, scared or misunderstood. Similarly, in LGBT community centers and other environments, you may have been reluctant to talk about the parts of your life that have been affected by your mental illness and recovery, because you were afraid that other people in the community would not understand or accept you.

Rainbow Heights Club provides a supportive and encouraging environment where you can be fully
yourself and begin to heal.

Rainbow Heights Club is a project of the Brooklyn based, Heights Hill Mental Health Service, South Beach Psychiatric Center, Community Advisory Board (CAB). The CAB is an independent and 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization providing auxiliary services to the treatment provided by the New York State Office of Mental Heath at Heights Hill. CAB members are a group of community stakeholders that meet quarterly to assist the Heights Hill Mental Health Service in identifying and addressing unmet community need.

In 2000, in conjunction with the Heights Hill Mental Health Service staff, the CAB identified Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) psychiatric consumers as a very underserved and disenfranchised population. In 2001 the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) awarded a contract for the development and operation of a “mental health consumer advocacy program” to the CAB. Since 2001, Rainbow Heights Club is the first, and to our knowledge, the only government funded program that specifically targets the needs of LGBTQ people living with mental illness in the nation. All programs and services of Rainbow Heights Club are free of charge to consumers.

Growing over the years to serve nearly 750 members, 5 days per week the agency now welcomes LGBTQ mental health consumers from all five New York City Boroughs.
